Title: Technology and Assessment

In this session, the presenter will provide an overview of the role of computers in past, present and future English language assessments. This will be accomplished through a brief historical perspective of computers in language assessment as well as a look at the role computers and technology have played in the field of ELT.  An overview of the various types of computerized assessments will be provided (i.e. CBT, CAT, WBT and online assessment) and the advantages/disadvantages of each will be discussed. Finally, the future of computerized and online assessment from the presenter’s perspective will be offered. 

Bio

Dr. Christine Coombe is an Associate Professor at the Higher Colleges of Technology, Dubai Men’s College.  She has published numerous books on areas like assessment literacy, research methods, teacher effectiveness and professionalism as well as TBLT and leadership.  She served as President of the TESOL International Association from 2011 to 2012.  She currently serves on the Board of Directors at TESOL Gulf.

Title: Balancing Life & Study: Benefits of online education

Online learning is not for all and this is due to various reasons.  For example, lack of awareness, no familiarity, fear of technology, old norms can be some of the factors that deter individuals to benefit from it.  Online learning has “invaded” our lives since the pandemic started and it has become the new norm.  This talk will focus on the benefits of online education and some practical (tried-and-tested) strategies to make the most of the online learning process.

Ms. Fatmah A Ali is the Vice-Director of Master English Edu & Training, GCC and is the current President for KSAALT TESOL, an ELT organization based in Saudi Arabia.
